This human service ministry was formally created as a Holy Cross Parish Human Concerns Ministry in 2019 in response to the significant increase in the needs of the impoverished and homeless in our community. The provision of knitted scarves, hats and personal hygiene items was seen as a generous and effective means of relieving the physical needs of the indigent. However, Christ’s call to evangelize, welcome and pray for these individual recipients is also asked of us as faith-filled Christians. Our objectives are threefold:
Serve God and our neighbors using our time, talents and resources to knit, crochet or purchase scarves, hats and personal hygiene items for the homeless and indigent amongst us.
Demonstrate our Faith in Action to convey a sense of dignity and care for those living on the streets and in shelters. A special scriptural card of encouragement to trust in the Lord, along with a small crucifix, is attached to each scarf.
Evangelize and identify our Catholicity in this outreach ministry by including a resource card with contact information for Holy Cross Catholic Church.
Parish participation is most welcome and the need is great. There are no meetings to attend and any man, woman, child, age, or ethnicity is encouraged to share in this worthy outreach mission for the homeless. It’s a year-round activity you can engage in at your leisure and we ask for your prayerful consideration and God’s abundant blessing of this ministry. Knitting Instructions and a Supply List for the Homeless can be found below.
The annual collection of items begins in October and ends in
mid-November. Reminders will be published in the parish bulletin.
